BU8501 MARKETING FOR THE 21ST CENTURY (3.0 AU)

This course aims to provide a firm understanding of marketing and is designed for students who have chosen to specialise in disciplines other than business. As you may already know, a working knowledge of marketing is beneficial wherever your career takes you. We will discuss basic principles of marketing. However, the focus is on its application and how this understanding could potentially enhance your future performance in your chosen field. A hands-on approach is expected and activities have been incorporated to encourage observation and enhance analytical ability. The course will require you to analyse businesses, evaluate alternatives, collaborate with team members, lead discussions, present your analysis and propose recommendations on selected organisations. The course will begin by discussing sustainable marketing in the global context. We continue with marketing strategy and customer value. This requires an understanding of the business environment and buyer behaviour. We then focus on the 4 P?s, namely product, price, place and promotion.

This is a very messy module. Meaning that there’s so much content that’s all over the place. You’ll only understand what you’re been learning and see ALL the links once lecture 10 rolls around. Also, something dumb is that they didn’t teach us how to form arguments or write and essay until the last week where they finished the whole syllabus. So basically, you are only taught writing structure and skills 2 weeks before exams.

On the bright side, despite the intensity, it’s a pretty chill module because despite having a lecture + seminar slot, you only have to attend seminar because the seminar class will reinforce important concepts taught in lecture. Just make sure you watch the lecture online (on x2 speed).

There 2 20% presentation so it’ll be nice to take with your friends (5-6 people) so you guys can score together! It’s semi-formal so you have to memorize your script and present and have a 5 min Q&A. As long as your group made the neccesssry preparations it shouldn’t be a problem answering the questions from the floor.

10% closed-book quiz, 20% class participation and attendance and 30% open-book finals. The clues are Super Obvious. You literally don’t have to study anything else. Just study what is given as hints, write out your template and enter the exam hall! I hope I do well for this, but I only took with 2 other friends so for one of our presentation there was a slight blip so…. fingers crossed!

Year Taken: AY 14/15, Sem 2
    Lecturer: Boey Yew Tung
    Grade: SU
Grading components: Class Participation, Midterms, Group Presentations (40%) & Finals (30%, open book!!)

The reason why I took this module was because my friends told me it was ‘easy to score’ + I really wasn’t interested in any other business modules so I just wanted to get this BM GERPE over and done with. This module consists of 1 tutorial and lecture session each week. We marked our own attendance every tutorial session but the size of the class wasn’t very big so it was pretty obvious when someone from your group is absent. Lecture sessions were recorded so I only attended the last lecture of the module as it was a revision lecture.

You’ll have to choose a brand to present on, so it’ll be good if your group decides on what brand to do on earlier as this would allow more time for research. My group presented on Under Armour & even dressed in Under Armour apparels during our presentation.

Initially, I had no plans of SU-ing this module but when I was given back my Presentation 1 and midterms results; they were rather mediocre hence the decision to SU.

If you have an interest in Marketing – this module would be enjoyable for you. The lecturer delivers the fundamentals of marketing extremely well. If you can present well – this module will probably be easy for you (especially if you have a good group too) Also, the finals are open-book so you just have to understand the concepts well, instead of memorizing.

Tips: Take this module with your friends so you guys can work together as a group. Or else you’ll have to join a random group which you may not be comfortable working with. Don’t be afraid to use different creative ways of presenting! One group even brought an airfryer to cook food for their presentation and they scored really well.
