HG4047 PRAGMATIC THEORY (4.0 AU)

In this unit we focus on how we understand what someone is trying to communicate to us when they say or write something to us, especially how the particular words and structures are used for the purpose of getting us to understand just what the speaker intends. Given that the meaning of a word or structure depends on how it is used, we will look at the physical and cultural contexts within which communication occurs and develop an understanding of the role they play in the communication of meaning.

Prof. Randy is back and is no longer retiring! I enjoyed his class the previous semester and enthusiastically enrolled into this class. While the term “Pragmatic Theory” might sound intimidating, the content is actually relatively easy to grasp and Prof. Randy uses a lot of real-life examples to drive home the points. The tute slip is about a 1-page long reflection on the weekly topics and relating them to your experiences in real life.

The quizzes were not difficult, but there were a lot of tricks. Just think simple, because I regret overthinking and writing wrong answers lol. I did not manage to score full marks for either one and I was worried if I could get at least an A-, since the bell curve was very steep. Overall, the slackest Level 4000 linguistics class I have ever taken. Prof. Randy is a very good teacher and he breaks down concepts into bite-sized chunks while using examples from real life to illustrate his points.
