HS2009 SOCIOLOGY OF THE LIFE COURSE (3.0 AU)

The social experiences of individuals change as they develop through different stages of life from birth to death. Members of each age cohort and generation share certain formative or defining experiences such as schooling, work, family life, and retirement. This subject examines the various stages of the life-course in tandem with the changing demographic profile of a society, paying attention to social factors related to marriage, parenthood, family structure, education, employment, health and medical care, living arrangements, lifestyles and social equity. The social, economic and political implications and consequences of demographic trends and the policies that address such trends are also discussed.
