Like so many other aspects of life, language communication has been revolutionised by the introduction of the Internet. This course explores how the structure and use of English have been shaped by the popularity of new modes of communication made available by the Internet: SMS, e-mail, chatrooms, Internet Relay Chat, Usenet newsgroups, World Wide Web pages, and virtual worlds. The implications of these changes for our thinking and understanding of language will also be discussed.

Year Taken: AY 20/21, Sem 2
Assignment 1 – 30% Individual
Assignment 2 – 30% Group
Assignment 3 – 30% Individual
Class participation – 10% IndividualFairly interesting mod that is about how language has evolved along with the advent of technology. I found the content for this module a bit dry to understand, but the assignments were very fun. Assignment 1 was a 6-8 pages write-up with pictures and diagrams on a speech-to-text medium not covered in class, while assignment 2 was a group work on improving wikipedia articles. As for assignment 3, we were given three types of questions to choose from, and for each question we have to do a 6-8 pages worth of writeup with pictures and diagrams, similar to assignment 1. To be honest, I feel that this module has some overlap with HD0101, so if HD0101 is not your cup of tea, do avoid taking this module. Though if you like mods with no quizzes and are not too bothered by the content, you can consider taking this up.
