This course focuses on issues central to the phenomenon of bilingualism. It evaluates both sociological and psychological evidence and claims about the bilingual experience, and discusses the implications of these claims on the social perception of bilinguals in different societies. Despite the fact that more than half the world’s population is bilingual, the general public still harbours many misconceptions about what it means to be a bilingual. This course examines some of the myths about bilingualism and explores the potential that bilingualism brings to individuals and society.

One lecture + one tutorial per weekOne of the core lms mods for y1s2. This was the mod where I learned the importance of appreciating my Pre-U teachers and genuinely helpful professors and TAs. The stuff taught by the prof is interesting, but the assessment was not. All I can say is that no matter how much I planned for this mod, I still feel like I got slapped in the face when the assignments were announced.
Also, do not trust and follow the guidelines for the assignment blindly. I did that for the Annotated Bibliography and got a fat ass C+. If time permits, try to google what is annotated bibliography, write out a full draft and consult the tutors face-to-face. Their feedback provided in-person is much more effective and helpful. And no, HW0207’s version wasn’t what they were looking for.
For Annotated Bibliography, we had to first craft a research question and send it to the tutors for approval. Once they gave the pass, I need 10 research papers to answer my research question. For each paper, I have to write on how relevant/useful the article is to my research question. There is no need to write a full essay, but the writing must show that I have read the research papers and how I plan to use the paper when crafting arguments to answer my self-crafted research question. The annotated biblio is NOT a summary of the article. At least five out of the ten papers have to be published within the last five years.
As for the 2000 word essay, I was given a set of open-ended questions, and had to choose one to write an essay for. While there is a need to find at least 10 research articles, there was no need to write an annotated biblio for all them. It is best to start on this asap because by the time this has been assigned, the workload will be piling.
The original video assignment dealt with multilingualism, and we were supposed to shoot an 8-10 minute video on multilingualism in Singapore. However, that got defenestrated when the pandemic struck and we had to convert our classes and assignments online. It was first changed to report writing on a survey that the profs and tutors had crafted. We were tasked to find participants for the survey as part of the grading criteria. The report-writing was later converted to a video presentation on the survey results in a bid to lighten our workload.

This module is actually pretty light in content. The reason it seems so heavy is due to the fact that all of our weekly tutorials are in the form of mini projects. Imagine writing a 1,500 words essay every week! Nevertheless, we survived it. Make sure you get group members who are not freeloaders or else this could be very taxing on you.
30% Tutorials Grading
30% Quiz
30% Quiz
10% Tutorial ParticipationAlmost everybody would be getting around the same grades for the tutorial component (if your group put in a reasonable amount of effort) so what determined the final grades would be the tests. The tests were a whopping 60% and doing well for the tests definitely assure you of at least an A-. A lot of people did not do the readings and did badly for the first quiz. Fortunately, I got advice from seniors who regretted only studying the lecture slides. The final quiz was actually a compilation of questions sent in by your peers (you guys would be asked to formulate your own questions later in the semester). Most of the test questions were in MCQ format. The taught concepts were easy to grasp in my opinion.
