CS8700 CULTURALLY COMPETENT COMMUNICATOR IN A MULTICULTURAL WORLD (3.0 AU)

We live in an era of rapid globalization in which being able to communicate across cultures is imperative to our ability to function in a diverse workplace, city, and world. In order to develop a foundational level of cross-cultural competency, this course will guide students to learn about the ways people from different cultural backgrounds think, communicate, and behave based on the value systems, worldviews, and narratives that ground them. Utilizing research findings, real-life stories and simulated experiential learning, this course is designed to increase our awareness, knowledge and skills of our own cultural backgrounds and the social, cultural and historical context in which we live in and communicate with others across cultures. The goal is to help students become a competent communicator in culturally diverse work places and societies.

Just like what the title says, it is about how to be a competent communicator who is culturally mindful, and the reasons behind intercultural conflicts. From what I’ve heard (and also experienced), it’s the least business-y mod one can take to clear their GERPE-BM. Imo the content is quite easy to understand but the workload is a bit much if you are looking for something to just SU. Yeah the class part weightage is quite high so under the usual live lecture settings, students are required to speak up in front of the entire lecture hall. The class part also consists of weekly forum discussions that I had to take part in virtually by sharing my answers on a case study posted during that week.

As for the final project, we were originally tasked to do both a report and a presentation of the said report. The pandemic being the diva it is, thwarted the plans and the prof decided to lighten the burden by requiring us to only submit the report.

I’ve also heard that this mod is not available every year, much less every sem so if you are interested, do keep a look out for this mod during STARS war.
