This course introduces drawing at a basic level through developing various first hand observation skills. Students will create a range of drawings from portraits to still life depictions. Students will learn skills in measuring, proportion, tone, volume, negative space etc. By the end of this course, students will develop a competency in making drawings with a degree of accuracy to what is being observed. Attendance is a requirement as there are continual and formative assessments.

I took this mod 2 years ago and was taught by Tricia too! She was an amazing tutor who was patient in helping all students, especially the weaker ones. Going through this course, I would say my drawing skills have improved tremendously. A useful tip to yall is to go through the class first to see what supplies you need to buy 🙂

Year Taken: AY 15/16, Sem 2
Lecturer: Tricia Low
Grade: SU
Grading components: 6 Drawings, 2000 word reflectionWhen I recommend people to take drawing everyone would respond by saying “omg no! I can’t draw at all”. But that’s the reason why I took drawing – to learn how to draw!
Taking a drawing module never crossed my mind because I really can’t draw. But after seeing how much my friend’s drawing improved after taking this module I was inspired to actually learn how to draw!
And no, it’s not easy. But did I learn how to draw? Definitely. I did take this module with an intention to SU though, so it was a lot less stressful because there was no pressure to perfect my drawing. It was a very fun learning process la but I still wouldn’t say I can draw properly.
Tricia’s a great teacher and she will really sit down with you to help you if you show any signs of struggles. Even if you don’t show any signs, she will come and check on you to see if you are on the right track.
So, every drawing will be done over the course of 2 weeks, and the teacher will teach you how to draw + have mini activities before you begin drawing. There is also no homework as everything can be completed in class. She will take a picture of your work at the end of every drawing. You can bring home your work to touch-up, let the teacher document your work the next lesson. In addition, you’ll have to spend about $60 on materials or you could just borrow it from someone who has taken Drawing before.
Tips: Be open-minded and allow yourself to learn how to draw from scratch. She says it’s easier for those who have completely no idea how to draw to learn, than those who have prior drawing experience.
