This course aims to provide an overview of the importance of biostatistics in the scientific design of experiments and in the data collection processing, analysis and interpretation of the life sciences. Students will learn the basic theory, computational skills, and applications of statistics in biology.

Year Taken: AY 14/15, Sem 2
First half was bioinformatics, second half was statistics. Again, this feels like 2 modules combined into 1 — I actually feel like I’m taking 6 + 2 + 2 modules this sem because I was exempted from BS1001 and BS1003; some of the content was actually covered in these modules and BS1007 and BS1008 felt like 2 modules combined into 1. Yeah……….. this is my second least favourite module this sem.

Year Taken: AY20/21, Sem 1
Grade: A-Ugh! The only dent in an otherwise perfect GPA semester! Apparently, SBS courses are known for the inverted bell curve, where either you study really hard for their courses or not at all.
Lab Report (50%)
There are a total of 4 Statistical Labs using SPSS software. This is a joke compared to GIS and some of us even forgot how to follow simple steps stated in lab instruction. I think ASE students had trouble because our brains were in hyperdrive dealing with the damn GIS labs, but all the biostats lab really required was for yoto to follow mindlessly.
However, this is where I had my greatest downfall. At the end of each lab, SPSS generates a ton of diagrams and tables for you to include in your report. Choose ONLY the necessary ones as any redundant information are penalised. Being who I am , I added ALL the figures and was subsequently marked down… you have been warned. OK but in my defense, Lu Lan Yuan never warned us and gave us the feedback for each lab ONLY AFTER we submitted all 4 labs which was really dumb because you would have repeated mistakes made since lab 1 all the way till the end without realising. At this point, I can only sacrifice myself to pave the way to future students…
God really didn’t want me to have a semester with perfect GPA…
Finals (50%)
What else is there to say? A typical SBS finals that require you to regurgitate what you have memorised and to apply the appropriate statistical tests to the problems given. This is a mix of MCQ and written answers.
