This course provides an introduction to understanding the complex interplay between science, technology, and warfare. Focusing on the twentieth century, it examines both the impact of science and technology on the conduct of warfare and the impact of war on the practice and knowledge of science and technology. In particular, the course will cover the use of chemical weapons in World War I, the development of radar and the atomic bomb during World War II, the development and spread of the hydrogen bomb during the cold war, and the development of new weapons to fight terrorism in the post-9/11 era.
