HH3025 THE CULTURAL, SOCIAL & ECONOMIC HISTORY OF FOOTBALL (3.0 AU)

This course will explore the connections between football – particularly its most `globalised’ forms – and global political, economic and cultural power relations. The course combines thematic analysis and national case studies that invite connections across boundaries of time and space. It explores the game’s relationship with issues ranging from economic, social, and political change as well as issues of religion, migration, gender and technology.

This module opened my eyes to seeing sport in a multifaceted lens, and gave us great hands-on handles to historically analyse the objects and happenings of football history. Prof Scott Michael Anthony delivered each seminar in lively fashion, making the content digestible to students like myself who may not have prior exposure to football. I thoroughly enjoyed the seminars every week, and I walked away from the module with a deeper appreciation of how footballing and sport in general has taken on different roles in society through the years. But most importantly, I learnt to ask good historical questions that would serve me good in my upcoming courses as well.
