Year Taken: AY 19/20, Sem 2
Annotated bibliography (500 words): 25% individual
Research paper (1200-1300 words): 40% Pair work
Oral presentation (8-10 mins per pair): 20% Pair work but assessed individually
Class participation: 15%
One tutorial per weekOne of the GER-Core mods that lms students have to take in y1s2. While the assignments remained the same, the presentation was changed from live presentation to filmed presentation. In other words, we had to record ourselves presenting our slides at home. The assignments were relatively manageable because the mod is mainly focused on our writing style instead of the content (but of course your content still needs to make sense). For the annotated bibliography, we had to find three research papers and write the learning points from it. Luckily, the lecturer gave us a format to follow so there was not much confusion.
For the research papers, we were given the freedom to choose whichever topic we would like to write about. After which, we had to give an oral presentation on our research paper. Not too difficult if you’re aiming for B and above.

Very tough module to get an A as everybody would be doing well. This module introduced research writing and annotated bibliography. The professor would give you samples and formats so just follow these accordingly. For the research topic, try to make sure it is unorthodox yet relevant as you get bonus points for creativity. I feel that the reason I did not get a full A was because I chose a very common and simple topic to write about, so my suggestion is to go YOLO and be creative! Don’t play too safe like me.
25% Annotated Bibliography
40% Research Essay
20% Presentation
15% Tutorial ParticipationThe annotated bibliography was due around week 4 or 5. The research essay took up a lot of time as you had to do literature review and conduct social experiments. I personally feel that a lot of people fumble at the literature review. What the professor was looking for was identifying research gaps, justifying why your research would be important and demonstrating the relevance of existing research to your original work. For the presentation, try to engage the audience and be very calm yet clear in delivering your speech. I feel that she personally preferred presentation styles that were similar to participants in speech contests. No drama nor skit, just standing there and delivering your point.
