LS9001 SPANISH LANGUAGE LEVEL 1 (3.0 AU)

Designed for beginner students, this course in basic Spanish teaches the four skills in an integrated manner, using a communicative approach. Through the use of various written and audio-visual materials, students are trained to: provide personal information about themselves (name, address, nationality, occupation, studies, etc.), describe things and people (physical appearance and personality), locate things and people, express habitual actions at specific times, talk about festivities and special events, and express their hobbies and likes/dislikes. In addition to teaching the language, this course also aims at providing students with a global vision of the Spanish and Latin American culture from various perspectives (arts, music, festivals, gastronomy, etc.).

Probably one of the easiest European languages to lean as the pronunciation is similar to english. The class was fun as the teacher was engaging and there are a lot of opportunities for practicing Spanish conversation with friends!

The workload is quite heavy as there are weekly quizzes online besides the test, essay and the oral exam.

As someone who has taken European language before (e.g. French), it is easier for me to comprehend most of the materials taught in class because there are some similarities (although I seem to always get bamboozled by the “false friend (same word, different meaning in other language)”). Since it is still level 1, I would say that the class is very accommodating (like everyone seem to start from zero and no smurfs).

For people who are not accustomed to genderization of nouns, which is often to occur in European Languages, it may come as a shock at first, but this level is more taxing on “memorization”, so as long as you are able to memorize the gender and somewhat get the gist of the language, it will be easier. Duolingo can be a supplementary materials for this class.

Workload is not that heavy as the exercise in NTULearn remain open until the end of the module itself, but it does require you to be proactive (e.g. if the teacher open up a discussion board space for a non-graded writing assignment, DO IT as it will help a lot in quizzes). My teacher, Ms. Carolina, happened to be a fun person, so the class won’t be dull (I endorsed her if you are planning to take the class hahaha).

Quite interesting module! It is manageable in hardness but requires a bit memorising.
