RE1015 CHEMICAL & BIO ENGINEERING FUNDAMENTALS & APPLICATIONS (3.0 AU)

Part 1 Biomolecular Engineering: Introduction to concepts of molecular biology and cell biology to engineering students, topics include introduction to structure and properties of biological molecules (i.e. sugar, protein, lipid), basic cellular structures (i.e. DNA, RNA, cell membrane, organelles), cellular processes (i.e. transcription, translation, metabolic pathway), enzyme catalysis and its application in biosensor, introduction to recombinant DNA technology and its application in the production of biologics.
Part 2 Chemical Engineering: Reaction Kinetics and Equilibrium – Chemical kinetics and Catalysis (rate laws, expressions, constants, Arrhenius expression), Chemical Equilibrium, Le Chatelier’s principles for equilibrium in solution and gas phases, material balance in single and multiple units, chemical process mass balance involving single and multiple phases. Students will learn the applications of chemical kinetics and equilibrium to environment, chemical, metabolic and biomedical processes. A field trip to a chemical / pharmaceutical manufacturing plant or a chemical synthesis lab will be included.
Part 3 Bioengineering and biotechnology: Applications and Impact: Introduction to relevant applications of biotechnology and medicine, including applications such as regenerative medicine, biosensors and artificial organ devices, biomaterials, and global health challenges.
